The Lead Phlebotomy Technician provides daily support and limited oversight to the Phlebotomy Department.
Job Duties
Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed.
Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome
Maintains technical competencies as outlined in staff level job descriptions by performing specimen collection, including phlebotomy, respiratory swabs, and skin tests, with skill and compassion.
Follows all laboratory procedures for properly identifying at all phases, specimen collection, order entry, specimen receiving, call center and all other duties
Prioritizes workload to ensure timely collection of all patient samples
Assists in validating the laboratory information system to ensure that the optimal process is being trained, followed and audited.
Actively seeks and identifies opportunities for process improvement, including performance of audits and plans of correction.
Assists in procedure writing, updating, and validating
Acts as a resource for laboratory medicine information to providers and others
Educates and trains all staff and students, to include maintaining training documents, completing review and sign off of new staff.
Ensures proper usage, inventory and ordering of department supplies.
Provides input for hiring, training, performance evaluations and corrective action.
Assists with appropriate scheduling and staffing levels, including covering as needed.
This may include weekends and/or holidays.
Role models and teaches outstanding customer service for patients, families and colleagues.
Provides limited leadership responsibilities, including behavior monitoring and correction
Maintains and improves skills by participating in at least one continuing education activity annually.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of specimen collection procedures, including venipuncture, capillary collection, TB placement, and respiratory swabs
Knowledge of different patient populations and their needs, including neonatal, pediatric, geriatric, and trauma
Ability to work quickly and efficiently under pressure without sacrificing quality
Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work with interruptions
Skill to use the laboratory information system (LIS)
Detail-oriented
Ability to complete appropriate documentation and paperwork clearly and completely
Professional Experience
Required: Two years experience
Education
Required: High school diploma or GED
Preferred: Graduate of a phlebotomy training program or medical assisting program
Licensure, Certification, Registration
Preferred certification with either American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), PBT (ASCP); American Medical Technologists (AMT), RPT (AMT); or National Healthcareer Association (NHA), CPT (NHA)
Location: Mercy Medical Center - Cedar Rapids · Phlebotomy
Schedule: Full Time, Evening Shift, 1200-2030, M-F with coverage as needed.
